INSTALLING WALLCOVERING IN RECTANGULAR TILE FORMAT

Technical plan

If you are going to place a scene or decor, you will find a technical plan on the box and on the labels.

Preparation

  • Ensure the wall is dry, clean, slightly absorbent, and smooth.
  • Remove any old wallpaper. We recommend you use Arte Easypro for this.
  • Sand down any old coats of paint that do not have good adhesive properties and remove sanding dust. Level the wall first if the surface is uneven.
  • Remove any grease or dust from the walls.
  • The walls must have a neutral pH value. If not, they must be neutralised.
  • Treat the walls with a suitable fixative. Afterwards, it is recommended to apply a good-quality water-based primer.
  • Do not install wallcoverings on insufficiently dry walls. Discolouration may occur and bonding will not be optimal.
  • Paint the wall with a primer in the same shade as the tiles.
  • Check the tiles for defects before use. Notify the manufacturer of any visible faults.
  • Unpack the tiles. Preferably leave them in their plastic sleeves and spread them out using the labels on the packaging to check that each tile is present in accordance with the plan. • Only use tiles with the same batch number on the same wall.
  • Check the appearance after 6 tiles. We cannot accept complaints once more tiles have been installed.
  • Individual and unplaced tiles are fragile. Therefore, always handle them carefully and with two hands.

Adhesive

Use high-tack mounting adhesive with an extremely strong initial tack or an equivalent strong-bond mounting or polymer adhesive. Using a different adhesive is at the user’s own risk and should be thoroughly tested beforehand.

Working method

  • In case of a panoramic: if the design is too large to fit on the wall in its entirety, it is recommended to centre it horizontally and vertically.
  • Create a grid on the wall while keeping in mind the shape and repetition of the tile. This will help position the tiles correctly. Apply marker lines on the wall from top to bottom at (the start of) each row of tiles to be fitted.
  • Always start in a corner of the tile pattern to be applied. Use a cross line laser or spirit level to ensure your work is perfectly horizontal. Then, finish the design horizontally, row by row. • If necessary, trim the tiles at ceiling level. Trim each of these tiles individually to the correct, appropriate size to fit neatly and flush with the ceiling. See the chapter on Cutting and Finishing.
  • If necessary, trim the tiles in a corner.
  • Always match each tile as closely as possible to the previous one.
  • The final row of tiles may also need to be trimmed to obtain a nice straight fit at the bottom where they meet the floor or skirting board. Applying adhesive
  • Apply the adhesive to the back of the tile in a vertical line pattern. Do certainly not apply adhesive to the wall but only to the tile itself.
  • Place the tile on the wall according to the plan.
  • As the top layer of the tile is delicate, it should be handled with care. Apply pressure by hand and then with a soft rubber roller. Avoid scratches and imprints on the surface of the tile. On no account should you use a spatula or paper towels.
  • Please bear in mind the short bonding time of the adhesive. For mounting adhesives, this is about 5 minutes.
  • ALWAYS avoid getting any adhesive on the wallcovering, as adhesive is difficult to remove!
  • Remove any adhesive residues from the wall next to the tiles.

Cutting and Finishing

  • The tiles at the ceiling, skirting board, and corners can be adjusted and trimmed.
  • They can be cut with a sharp snap-off knife next to a ruler. Carefully cut several times next to the ruler on the backside of the tile. Make sure not to damage the tile with the ruler and that the cut with the blade is as clean as possible. Use a new blade for each tile.

Maintenance

  • The tiles can be carefully wiped lightly with a lint-free clean white cloth or a synthetic chamois leather and clean water. It is possible that circles may remain.
  • Do not use chemical or solvent-based cleaners.
  • Do not use paper towels to clean the tiles.
