Configurator & technical plan
Calculate how many tiles you need for your wall and get a clear picture of the result using the configurator. Print the result, the technical drawing can help you with the installation.
Preparation
- Ensure the wall is dry, clean, slightly absorbent, and smooth.
- Remove any old wallpaper. We recommend you use Arte Easypro for this.
- Sand down any old coats of paint that do not have good adhesive properties and remove sanding dust. Level the wall first if the surface is uneven.
- Remove any grease or dust from the walls.
- The walls must have a neutral pH value. If not, they must be neutralised.
- Treat the walls with a suitable fixative. Afterwards, it is recommended to apply a good-quality water-based primer.
- Do not install wallcoverings on insufficiently dry walls. Discolouration may occur and bonding will not be optimal.
- Paint the wall with a primer in the same shade as the tiles.
- Check the tiles for defects before use. Notify the manufacturer of any visible faults.
- Unpack the tiles. Preferably leave them in their plastic sleeves and spread them out using the labels on the packaging to check that each tile is present in accordance with the plan.
- Only use tiles with the same batch number on the same wall.
- Check the appearance after 6 tiles. We cannot accept complaints once more tiles have been installed.
- Individual and unplaced tiles are fragile. Therefore, always handle them carefully and with two hands.
Adhesive
Use the specially developed Arte Clearpro Extreme adhesive or an equivalent, easily workable adhesive. The use of any other adhesive than Arte Clearpro Extreme is at your own risk and carrying out a test beforehand is recommended.
Working method for a full wall
- Considering the shape and pattern of the tile, create a grid on the wall. This will help to position the tiles correctly. Place marking lines on the wall from top to bottom at (the beginning of) each row of tiles to be installed.
- Start at the top of the wall from the second row of tiles and with the second tile in the row. This will form a row of full tiles with only the last requiring some trimming in the corner. Use a laser or spirit level to ensure you are working horizontally level.
- Then apply the row that touches the ceiling. These tiles must be trimmed one by one to the correct, suitable size to fit the ceiling. See: Cutting and finishing.
- Then place the first tile to the corner on the second row on the left. This tile will also need to be trimmed.
- Then work from top to bottom, row by row, carefully positioning each tile to fit the other. Match each tile to the previous one as closely as possible. Try to smooth out any minor deviations in shape across multiple tiles.
- The last row of tiles will also have to be trimmed in order to fit the skirting board perfectly.
Working method for a composition
See Working method for a full wall for additional general information.
- Lay out the composition on the floor following the technical drawing or your own creation. You can download this drawing via the configurator on the website.
- Cut away the excess parts if necessary. You can use the leftovers as fillers later on.
- See chapter: Cutting and finishing.
- Check the height and width of the composition you want to make and determine the position of the composition on the wall.
- Decide which tile is the best to start with – the first tile of the longest row, for example. Draw a guide line on the wall from where you will start with this tile.
- Install the next tiles according to the chosen composition and make sure they connect well each time. Keep working horizontally, using the laser as a guide.
Applying adhesive
- Apply the adhesive to the back of the tile using a small, short-haired microfibre roller.
- Position the tile on the wall.
- Press down with a soft cloth or rubber roll. Avoid scratching the tile surface. Do not use a spatula or paper towels for this purpose.
- Take into account the open time of the glue. For Arte Clearpro Extreme, this is approximately 30 minutes.
- Avoid glue stains on the tiles.
- Remove any glue residue immediately by dabbing with a damp microfibre cloth and lukewarm water. Do this each time after placing a few tiles and certainly before the adhesive has dried.
- Remove any glue residue on the wall next to the tiles in the same way.
Cutting and Finishing
- The tiles can be adjusted and trimmed at the ceiling, skirting board and corners.
- The tiles can be cut with a sharp snap-off knife, using a batten as a straight edge.
- Cut carefully, several times, next to the straight edge on the top side of the tile.
- Make sure the straight edge does not scratch the tile and that the cut is as clean as possible. Use a new snap-blade section for each tile.
- If necessary, you can use fine sandpaper to smoothen the end of the cut. Small irregularities in the tiles can also be sanded in this way. If desired, the cut can be touched up with water-based polyurethane varnish. Do a test first.
Maintenance
- Clean the tiles with a lint-free white cloth or synthetic chamois leather and clean water.
- Do not use chemical or solvent-based cleaners.
- Do not use paper towels to clean the tiles.
